We were lucky enough to meet up with Cassandra Rhodin owner of the gorgeous childrenswear brand Mini Rodini whilst she was in London recently. She took us through her new “See you later Alligator” collection for SS15, inspired by the fishy life under the aquatic surface. And it went swimmingly!
Suzanne was chatting away to her in Swedish – I feel like it’s a language I might need to master as so many people in this industry are Swedish and I’m starting to feel left out! Anyway – without further ado – here’s what she had to tell us….and be aware – we have some hot gossip within….
1. You trained as an illustrator. What made you decide to design childrenswear?
I had my first son nearly 12 years ago and there was nothing I really liked on the market. I was looking for well produced, environmentally friendly clothes and they didn’t exist. It seemed a perfect match with my illustrator skills so I took all my savings and designed and produced a whole range before I had even sold in a single item!
2. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I don’t really follow the conventional route of looking at forward trends. I get most of my inspiration from animals and nature and I need to feel calm when I am working. I have lots of ideas for collections swimming around in my head. The difficulty is choosing which line to go with.
3. What sets your line apart from other kidswear lines?
Sustainability. 98% of our collection is made with sustainable materials. We feel we offer the whole package, sustainability, great design and a good price point.
4. What brands do you dress your kids in?
My two boys always wear Mini Rodini! I also think that Stella McCartney and Petit Bateau design good kids clothes.
5. What are your top 3 fashion pieces from your collection?
1) This Mermies top because it is fun and I felt so inspired to do this print. I was so satisfied when it I saw it as a finished piece.
2) Croc map print dress dress £45 – I really like this print and it makes little girls so happy when they try it on.
3) Love this dress – It’s a traditional shape but really cute and edgy
And just for you, as a bonus my lovelies, I have also pulled out my top 3 pieces from the collection:
This fun fishes printed sweatshirt would look great with jeans for a comfy chilled out look £40.
This leopard print green dress £36 is a grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat summer dress.
Last but not least, I love this super soft croco map print tee £25. The detailed map shows swaying palm trees, crocodiles and a giant hippo looking hungry! No need to fish around in the wardrobe to finish off this great look…these bright blue fish-scale sweatpants work perfectly.
6. Which celebrity kid would be your dream customer?
Many celebrity kids wear the brand – for example Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy is a fan. I guess if I had to pick a celebrity’s kids that I would love to have wearing my clothes it would be Drew Barrymore’s kids. Take note Drew!
7. What has been your greatest challenge with the brand?
To grow it in the right way. We haven’t always been able to produce as much as we would have liked because with a new business you don’t always have the cash flow. This can be tough but thankfully we are past that stage now.
8. How have you been able to balance work with family life?
My family life takes priority always. It is super important that I have always been around to collect and take my kids to and from school. It has meant working hard into the evenings but they are, and have always been my Number 1!
The dosage is small, but it acts faster. That is unlikely to help you if you have terminal cancer, but in all other cases, it’s perfect. When your muscles ache and you can’t lie, sit, stand and sleep – tramadolhealth.com will help you!
9. We love scoops at KSJ? Any future exclusives?
(a) We have a brand new collaboration with (achingly cool concept store) Colette in Paris that’s just launched. It is a mini-collection that includes a t-shirt and a sweatshirt (£37) made from 100% organic cotton certified by the world-leading standard GOTS. It’s exclusively at Colette in Paris and at Mini Rodini online and in-store.
(b) We are also looking to extend our home collection with some new product categories.
(c) We are looking to open our first store in the UK in London this year. (Cassandra was asking our advice as to where – let’s see if we guided her right!)
(d) We will be doing something BIG for our 10 year anniversary next year but our lips are sealed!
Well – forget scoops – that was a blooming SUNDAE with a cherry on the top!!!! Thanks SO much to Cassandra for her time and making me desperate for the sea and sunshine! Watch this space for more developments as we get wind of them. We love our Junkies to be the most in-the-know!
