Beatrix Potter Books Gets A Redesign for Her 150th Birthday

As babies and then kids, first came milk, then came weaning, then came Beatrix Potter’s books. I’m in fact haunted with memories of my mother dressing me as Peter Rabbit on various world book days because she had lovingly sewn a costume for me. This became uncool at around the age of 12. 

But what is cool is this. Penguin Random House is releasing a special edition collection of redesigned novels to celebrate 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter by teaming up with come iconic fashion designers. The titles include The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, with cover designed by Henry Holland, The Tale of The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin by design duo Preen, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Orla Kiely, The Tale of Tom Kitten by pop band-cum-fashion label Rodnik Band and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by luxury knitwear/street-wear label Cats Brothers.

Bunny Boiler

We all love a classic kids book don’t we? It gave me enormous pleasure to read books to my kids when they were weeny things that I had read to me as a kid. Pat the Bunny (Amazon £8.05) is a classic “touch and feel” book for small children and babies and has been a perennial best-seller in the US since its publication in 1940.

It is not a story per se, but more a collection of things to do, such as pat the fake fur of a rabbit on one page, feel a bit of sandpaper that stands for “daddy’s scratchy face” on another, and look in a mirror on yet another. For its time – it was groundbreaking in it’s use of interactive elements.

Word Up!

When my kids were in nursery aged 2, we were sent home with a reading book. For them to read. My husband and I thought it was ridiculous and pushy and didn’t bother.

Don’t get me wrong, I was huge into reading to them – from the age of 6 months. And they always loved it. It was the only time – apart from sleeping, when they were quiet and sat still. But they were 2. 2! Why on earth did we need to start pushing them to read by themselves at that age???

Boy did I live to regret that. Maybe it was just me, but I really had no idea quite how important it was for my kids to get reading by themselves – and the sooner, the better. Their whole world – both educational and imaginative – opens up to them once they can read.

A couple of weeks ago – we were invited to a chi-chi little number at the beautiful Ralph Lauren store in Bond Street hosted by Tamara Beckwith Veroni which was all about promoting reading for kids. You see Ralph Lauren has launched a Childrens Literacy Program to promote literacy in association with the charity Book Trust.
